To be human is to be part of a story. Stories were our first survival tool. The Indigenous Australian Dreamtime stories are just one example of storytelling being used to share important knowledge about waterholes, navigation and animal behavior, and these stories have helped the community survive for over 60,000 years. Stories create a shared identity and culture - we only have to look as far as the Bible, the Qur’an, the Bhagavad Gita and other religious texts to see the immense power stories hold in the development of our sense of self and community. Stories are the seed of power and resistance. Enslaved African Americans used folktales like Br’er Rabbit as coded resistance stories, teaching survival strategies, and offering hope in the face of gross oppression. Stories allow us to imagine possibilities - George Orwell’s 1984 invites us to reflect on the risks of allowing authoritarianism to take hold, and Star Trek offers space for us to imagine a society that has transcended war and racism.
